The music of Tonga

Hi readers,

This week in music we our looking into the music of Tonga, our teacher has set up some questions to ask and put down some links.

  1. Where is Tonga? – Located in Oceania onga is a small archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, directly south of Samoa and about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand.

2. Celebrating Tongan language week in Aotearoa we find one of the oldest instruments in Tonga known as fangufangu (nose flute) is still being used here in Aotearoa. Traditional tongan music video – the kailao Kailao

4. “Ko e fasi ʻo e tuʻi ʻo e ʻOtu Tonga” is the national anthem of Tonga.

5. Three facts about Tonga –

  •  Tonga is an archipelago of 169 islands of which only 36 are inhabited.
  • Tonga is the only Pacific country which was never colonised.
  • Tonga is the home of the humpback whales.
  • Sunday is a day of rest in Tonga.
  • British explorer James Cook visited Tonga in 1773.
